In Kushiel's series, Christianity as we know it did not rise. The lack of dark ages, Romanization and a handful of other things led to this. Instead the author created a hybrid of catholicism and Judaism and calls them the Yeshuites. What makes the Yeshuites different from Jusadism as we know it? Jesus, who is known in the series as Yeshua, the son of the One God Adonai. Yeshuites believe in Yeshua and that he will come again to the chosen land.

As a result, the "Yeshuites" (Jesus is referred to as Yeshua since it was much later that his name was Romanized) are a mix of Christianity and Orthodox Jews. They believe that Yeshua (Jesus) was the Mashiach (Messiah), the Redeemer and the King-To-Come, the son of the one god, Adonai. Elua, his origins from the blood of Yeshua and the tears of the Magdelene unrepentant, is unacknowledged by the Yesuhites. They do not believe he is the son of Yeshua. Lacking a nation of their own, they wander around many places, are not overly persecuted nor overly welcomed ain any particular place. This, and an ancient prophecy of Yeshua's have led many to immigrate to Vralia, seeking a new promised land there, and a break from the traditions of old. What we see basically is a break of the orthodox Yeshuites from the more socially integrated ones.

Yeshuites are a very plain folk. They are often clustered together where they are found, preferring the company of themselves, than the company of a people that were birthed and believe in a man that was born of the blood of Yeshua. Enclaves that support large groups, with halls of knowledge,"Halls of Yeshiva", for the scholars and religious officials called "Rebbe"

Their clothing is simple, modest, plain and unadorned, covering their body. Those who are religious have a "prayer shawl" over their shoulders. For men, the hair is kept short cropped, save for locks on either side at the front that curl and dangle down.

The Origin

Yeshuite is a recently new term for their people, in relation to how long they have existed and A name they had adopted as well. They were originally called the "The Haibru" or "Children of Yisra-el" This name carries from when they were 12 tribes just on the outskirts of Khebbel in Akkad.

They were near-kin to the Akkadians, worshiped the same god. El, that is: God whose True Name is unknowable. When Akkadia fell to the empire of Persis the twelves tribes, were scattered and all but 2 were lost, and their language was diluted to what one now knows as "Haibru". The Tribe of Dân was one, which headed south, towards Saba. The other tribe, the Tribe of Naftali but was rumored to have made their way north to the barren steppes, where Yeshua's nation is to be founded, in preparation for his return, Vralia.
