Reasons to Visit
- Clothing
- With an eye for dramatic dresses, or even demure ones, perhaps some of the latest Caerdiccian fashions from the city states, this is the place to go for haute couture in the city of Elua.
- Gossip
- With all the women that come through it's doors, the VEstiti is often a hotbed of the latest gossip that runs the city's streets. Whether it's old, new or jsut this moment, one can always find out someone elses business here.
Description
Inside, the shop proves itself long and a trifle narrow. A
double-paned window in the front facade allows the world outside to peer in,
and those inside to return the favor. Blue fabric drapes along the right side
of the glass, caught in place by a hook in the wall -- it can be let free to
block the view as needed.
The front half of the shop is devoted to nearly finished work.
Standing here and there are tailor's dummies, all wooden frames on metal
stands with wheels for movement. They're graced with gowns and night-clothes
and tunics, a flurry of colors and materials from the lowest (a simple tunic
and legging combo in a serviceable dark blue homespun cotton) to the highest
(pale, water-stained red silk with a red-rose brocade stomach, for a gown with
a tight waist and flared sleeves). When it starts to get dark, lanterns are
waiting -- lightly scented floral oil keeps the shop lit well enough. This
area of the shop is most easily seen from the street outside; the dummies are
clustered in little conversational groups according to the owner's whim so
that the back of the shop is less noticeable. An ornate cage is on a stand
near the window: two bright yellow canaries twitter about inside, with a small
bowl of seed at-hand for customers to entertain themselves.
That's probably because the work is done in the back: another bit of
curtain helps keep the tables back there private. Scattered across them are
the tools of the trade, along with unfinished heaps of colored material and
lengths of embroidery thread. Another window in the back of the shop sends
light streaming onto the tables, providing the best illumination for small
stitches. Tucked into the corner, a trap-door leads to the floor above. It's
rarely left open for long.
