Valkyrie Dagmaerdottir is a Skaldic doctor living in the City of Elua, and owner of the Winter Sanctuary Infirmary.

Background

A Childhood of Winter

Life began peacefully enough for Valkyrie. She enjoyed a comfortable childhood, rolling and frolicking in the snow among her fellow tribesman, whom her father ruled with a firm and generous hand as thane. She remembers little about these years in particular-- brief memories of snowflakes and songs, fur and fire, and the warm embrace of her mother, is all. It was not until the winter of 1165 that her first true memory was made.

A shadow in the night. A bit of a struggle. And then darkness. And when she woke up, she was on the saddle of a Caerdiccan slave trader, headed to Milazza to be sold. Although she doesn't remember much of the trip, she certainly remembers arriving in the city, as she was astounded by its architecture and immense population of people who didn't look anything like her. She was both fascinated and frightened beyond belief, and was quite unsure of what would become of her in a place like this.

What was to become of her, however, became very apparent when she saw money exchanged between her kidnapper and a Milazzan man: she was to be a slave.

The Master, The Doctor, The Mentor

Tizio Romai was a respected man within the Milazzan community-- for his amicability, as well as his exquisite skills as a churgeon. But as he grew older, he knew he would begin to require the help of another pair of hands, if he meant to continue practicing. After making his wishes public, he was contacted by a man who claimed to have a young girl indentured in his service and was willing to sell her for a fair price. Not knowing that this little girl had been kidnapped from her homeland-- and Skaldia, of all places-- Tizio purchased her debt, and sought to make both a servant and a companion out of her.

As a small child, Valkyrie helped him around his house with menial tasks such as laundry and cleaning his supplies. However, as she grew older, the young brunette began to show interest in Tizio's practice. He willingly obliged her, and began teaching her the basics of his trade. By the time she was sixteen, she was more knowledgable about matters of the human anatomy and the tools used to fix its afflictions than most senior medical students at the University of Tiberium would have been.

The Departed

In her twenty-fifth year, Valkyrie was coming very close to paying off her debt to Tizio in full. However, her mentor had become quite ill with old age, and after a few weeks of struggle, passed on. With her master and mentor dead, Valkryie's debt would be considered paid. And so, she departed Milazza, and Caerdicci Unitas altogether, bound west for different lands. Perhaps if she might have been able to remember where within Skaldia she had come from, she might have sought out her family now that she was free. However, to her dismay, she could not remember, and became resolute on leaving her past in the past.

After travelling through Terre d'Ange and Aragonia, Valkyrie eventually set her heart on living in the City of Elua, where she had heard Skaldi were slowly becoming more welcome, and there was always need for new doctors. Upon her arrival to the City (and thanks to a benefactor who is kept largely secret), she was able to set up her own establishment, the Winter Sanctuary Infirmary, in the eastern part of town. She is currently accepting patients.

Personality

Valkyrie is at once cool-headed and fierce, often holding her ground with a quiet strength when tested or argued with. She has a tendency to make both important and unimportant decisions swiftly-- perhaps too swiftly at times-- which lends her to being quite spontaneous. Despite her Skaldi temper, she is amicable with many of those she encounters, and would fight to the death for the sake of anyone close to her. That said, she can become roguish at times, making hasty or rash decisions. She is, after all, a Skaldi through and through.

Family, Friends, & Enemies

Family

Dagmaer Ulrikson - Father (NPC) - The lord of a steading within the great Manni tribe, Dagmaer was a beloved and respected leader within his clan. When his daughter Valkyrie went missing when she was only five years old, he searched for ten years, fruitlessly, for any sign of her or her kidnappers. After so many years of absence, however, she had been assumed dead.

Luta Frosthilddottir - Mother (NPC) - Dagmaer's wife was a loving mother, who greatly enjoyed doting on her only daughter. However, after Valkyrie's disappearance, she seemed to lose her love for life, and now clings desperately to her only son's every move.

Trygve Dagmaerson - Brother (NPC) - Older than his sister Valkyrie, Trygve played the part of protector throughout their short childhood together. It is rumored that he still searches the continent for his kidnapped sister from spring to fall, every year.

Tizio Romai - Master/Mentor (NPC) - Deceased. An older Milazzan churgeon who purchased Valkyrie when she was a young girl, Tizio came to teach the Skaldi girl everything he knew about his trade. Although he later regretted the way they were united, he considered Valkyrie his foster-daughter, and loved her as such until he passed.

Allies

Kahlan D'Seamus - Paramour. Her first patient in the City, the blonde-headed soldier with a charming smile came to her with a wound, most likely given to him at the hands of a Skaldi. But this, he didn't hold against her, and instead welcomed her to the City warmly. As they spend more time together, however, he quickly has become more of an intimate escort than a patient. The two live together in the infirmary.

Doliana Afrelius - Acquaintance. The doctor sees the Domina as an interesting-enough woman, who apparently teaches languages at the University. Perhaps, after she's cooled down from the incident in the Palace Gardens, she migh offer to assist the professor in her Skaldic language studies, in exchange for a few d'Angeline lessons.

Gabrielle no Heliotrope - Acquaintance. Brought to the infirmary after stepping on a broken wine bottle during a Heliotrope party at the beach, Gabrielle left a witty and generally kind impression on the doctor... that is, until she discovered that she took her soldier, Kahlan, as a patron. Though it made for a few awkward moments, Valkyrie fixed the girl's foot up well, and in the end, the two have become mutually-respectful acquaintances. Perhaps, over time, the doctor will warm up even more to her.

Others

Dominik Norstadt - Benefactor. The Comte is a pompous bastard. A base barbarian. An infuriating cur. Despite how apt all these descriptions are, Valkyrie cannot help but grow more intrigued by him each time they meet. Somewhat else lies beneath the murky surface of his cool demeanor, and her curiosity almost always betrays her common-sense when it comes to finding out what.

Briar Renaud - Acquaintance. Valkyrie met the baronesse in Lorraine, during some not-so-pleasant business. However, she does find the woman intriguing, if not overly proud. Perhaps, if they had met under better circumstances, she might have made a friend of the woman.

Hermes de Trevalion - Acquaintance. Serving (or, at least trying to serve) as physician to the Duc, Valkyrie thinks him an interesting-enough man, though stubborn as a bull. Charming as he seems, she's sure he's well-received among most women of the d'Angeline court in Elua, though he's certainly not /her/ type.
