The technology in the world is early renaissance, with various nations still firmly entrenched in the medieval. The main source of research and development is Caerdicca Unitas, thanks to their considerable amount of universities and philosophers. La Serenissima, in particular, is considered one of the hubs of modern thought and invention. The smelting of steel from iron and other metals has just begun in earnest, thanks to the invention of blast furnaces in Tiberium. It's for this reason, mainly, that the Skaldi are hesitant to attack the Caerdicci - iron weapons and leather armor fair badly against steel-tipped pikes. In addition, the Caerdicci have begun to develop gunpowder weapons, though the trade in gunpowder from the Far East is not enough to create larger weapons such as cannons.

Other parts of the world are slowly catching up, particularly Terre d'Ange, which shares much in common with Caerdicca thanks to trade between them. Steel tools in particular (such as ploughs and saws) are much sought-after, since they're much lighter and stronger than iron, so get jobs done faster and easier. Aragonia and Alba & Eire are roughly equivalent in terms of modernization; both are still fairly barbaric, more interested in warring within their own country than extending their cultural influence or developing new inventions. However, the second-hand influx of trade from Terre d'Ange has made the lives of the commonfolk easier than ever. In Skaldia they're somewhat distrustful of change, so tend to remain fairly stagnant in terms of technology in order to keep their culteral heritage pure.
