Description
Large, thick stone walls, impervious to fire, enclose the large workshop. Wide windows with their glossed black shutters flung open, allow the light of day to penetrate, and the welcome draft of cooler air to tease into the heated workspace. The forge itself is an open pit of smoldering coals, reds, oranges, ambers and yellows dancing like magical tongues seeking to devour the materials of their trade.
Several large wooden tables are arranged against the cool stone walls, tools of every sort dangling from racks both hanging, and attached to the walls. Hammers, swages, jigs, and fullers of every size and shape are available for the Blacksmith to ply his trade. Finished pieces of fanciful scrollwork lean against the back of the smithy, iron gates, iron doors, a neat little pile of shutter pulls and catches, and many other objects that have meaning only to the customer who ordered them. Horseshoes hang in abundance in racks along the wall, and the ping and clink of metal being worked can often be heard echoing in the street outside.
The floor of reddish earth is clean, but often littered with scraps of iron as the blacksmith shaped and shaves various items. Large barrels of aged oak filled with water stand beside each table, and one on either side of the forge itself. Another barrel, filled with mineral oil stands at the ready a foot or so away from the fire, ready to temper the creations into desired hardness. A large anvil, worn smooth on one side by the constant abrasion of metal on metal stands just in front of the forge, allowing for quick transition of the white hot iron from fire to finishing.
