The name Kushiel means "the rigid one of God." He is one of Elua's eight companions, having chosen to leave the One God to wander the earth with them.

Precepts
It is said that Kushiel was once the One God's servant, charged with the task of administering punishment to those who had sinned. But he loved his charges too much for the One God's liking, and they say that his charges loved him in turn, begging for the lash and grateful for it. He alone of the angels understood that chastisement was an act of love, a notion which displeased the One God, who desired worship above all things. Kushiel saw in Elua a soul that understood what he did, and thus left the service of the One God to follow Elua in his wanderings.
Chosen Land
Most of those who are descended from the bloodline of the Punisher reside in Kusheth, the land that he settled. It is known for being harsh, rocky territory, as unyielding as the Companion himself. It is one of the larger provinces of Terre D'Ange, connected to Azzalle in the northeast, Siovale in the south, and Namarre and L'Agnace in the east with coastline to the west. Traditionally, House de Morhban has ruled Kusheth, though House Shahrizai is another prominent and powerful line.
Priesthood
Kusheline clergy members wear black robes and bronze masks to conceal their faces.
Quotes
"Mighty Kushiel, of rod and weal
Late of the brazen portals
With blood-tipp'd dart a wound unhealed
Pricks the eyen of chosen mortals"
-Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey, page 27.
