Background
What the General Public Knows
The Duchess Jehanne Elissena L'Envers is a musician and a diplomat of some skill. Her singing brought her favor amid the court, and the admiration of the King and Queen. She was installed as a lady-in-waiting to Her Majesty, Athenais, shortly after her arrival to the City of Elua. She is known to play the harp as well as sing, and compose songs.
She was also sent home to Namarre to handle the matter of a minor rebellion which brewed over possible misappropriation of tax monies. This led to an assassination attempt on her, and the deaths of her parents and elder brother. In the wake of the tragedy, she was elevated to the rank of Duchess of Namarre, in the stead of her deceased father.
Rumors abound that King Bastien has his eye set upon her, with an aim to claim the virginity that she has been whispered to still retain at the age of 24. They have been seen together often, in both business and leisure, but neither has given any real reason to lend truth to the rumors in public.
What Only Those She Is Close to Know
Growing up in Namarre
Jehanne Elissena L'Envers was born the eldest daughter to Renault and Marguerite L'Envers. Renault was second cousin to the ruling line of the House, whereas Marguerite was the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Having built a foundation of wealth through his marriage to Marguerite, Renault looked to his children to advance his stature in Terre D'Ange. His son, Alain, had been deeply involved with House L'Envers politicking in Namarre. Not willing to pull his heir out of the Duchy lest power begin returning to the line, he chose to send his eldest daughter, Jehanne, to the City of Elua and the court Terre D'Ange. Outwardly he claimed that there his middle child could curry favor with the court on behalf of the L'Envers line, resulting in favor for the family back in Namarre. However, secretly he hoped to position his daughter in a marriage with a family rising in power should the L'Envers star continue to decline. His youngest child, Collette, was 15 years of age and remained with her family in Namarre when Jehanne headed to L'Agnace.
Jehanne was fiercly loyal to her family, and committed to increasing their status. She grew up trained in etiquette and manners as all young nobles are, but her mother, of a merchant family, taught her much more. Marguerite schooled her daughter on how to read a room, how to read body language and seek out motives in the eyes and words of others. It was a method of bartering successfully in business, and easily twisted to apply to bartering influence.
As a young girl she was taught to sing and compose songs, a method of gaining the eyes and attention of others, and often of disarming those with romanticized notions of the court. She was well educated, and grew to view life as a business in and of itself. She was closer to her parents than to either of her siblings. Alain was always amid the duchy's important people trying to edge his way into their graces, while Collette, being 8 years her junior, was more of a novelty in passing as she was so deeply immersed in her studies when she was born.
Oh Annan Waters Wonderous Deep
Jehannes's mother's family are merchants. Textiles merchants, who do a good deal of business out of the country. Her advisor in overseas matters was a Caerdicci gentleman, who resided with her family, along with his wife who was Namarrese, and his son, who was Jehanne's age. They grew up together and he was her dearest friend. They were inseperable. And when they were seven years of age, he told her he loved her. Granted he was yanking on her braid and stomping on her foot at the time.
He told her again on her 13th birthday, when he gave her a gift. A silver locket. He'd commissioned their portraits in miniature, spent every centime he'd saved up doing chores and errands for his parents for a year to do so. And she wore it from that day forward. The third time he avowed his love they were 16 and with their parents in Eire handling some trades.
He asked her to marry him. He was Caerdicci, and raised under his father's beliefs. He wouldn't touch her until we were wed. They never even kissed. Not once. And they never would. Her father had other plans for her. He wanted her to marry above her station, not to some half D'Angeline servant's son. He forbade it. And Mathieu could not bring himself to accept that he could still be her lover, were she married to another. Love as Thou Wilt is not understood by many outsiders. But she loved him, so she agreed to run away with him the next night. Her father was smarter than that. He sent Mathieu and his family across to the other side of the Annan River with Jehanne's mother to mind him, while she was kept with Renault. There was a storm the morning they were to flee. The river was impassable, but he tried to cross it anyway. The river claimed him. And part of her withered that day.
I Am Stretched On Your Grave
Jehanne spent the next 6 years grieving in body and soul. She refused to marry, refused to allow anyone to even court her. She fashioned herself a cold and distant personality, and threw herself into learning of the workings of the estate and the duchy, proving to be a deft hand at diplomacy and negotiation, as her chill demeanor prevented anyone from not taking her seriously. But her family feared for her.
There were many nights she would walk from her bed to the cemetery in which Matheiu was buried, and sleep atop his grave, soaking the ground with her tears. The priests tried to counsel her, but she would not go to the temple. She could not bear to let go of her childhood love, and convinced herself to ever give herself to another man would be a betrayal of him. Her guilt for his death was all encompassing.
To The City of Elua
At his wits end, her father finally sent her away, to L'Agnace and the City of Elua, with orders to advance the family in the eyes of the Crown. She went, although her grief came with her, bound in the locket she never took off. Once in the City, she began to entertain for their Majesties at various events, and was quickly brought into the Palace as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Athenais.
Jehanne initially portrayed herself as a sweet-natured, romantic young woman of charm and grace when she arrived in the City of Elua. For the most part it was nothing more than a mask she wore to try to conceal her family's ambitions. She came there first with the intent of becoming the Royal Bard, to get close to the crown and be among the courtiers to root out gossip. Later her ambitions altered.
Once the cheerful facade dropped, it became apparent to any and all that she was as cold and unwelcoming to romantic advances as a Skaldi winter. Some find this a challenge. The smarter ones leave her be.
From the Ashes of Her Life
A friendship and some flirtation followed. When a contract was placed on her family by the wife of a minor lordling she had imprisoned for embezzlement of tax monies, Bastien extended the Crown's protection to her family. He also confided in her that her father would be named Duke when the danger passed. It was shortly thereafter that there was an attempt on the Comtesse's life that left her in in a comatose state.
Once awaked, some weeks later, she found that some of the things she thought she had imagined in her endless sleep had happened. The King had come to her bedside often to read to her, and to keep watch over her. Their friendship deepened to one of real trust and mutual counsel, which was best exhibited when he delivered the news of the assassinations of her Father, Mother, and Brother, and the news she would be made Duchess in her father's stead. The had an unsteady moment when they argued over Jehanne returning to Namarre for the funeral of her family in her ill health and so soon after the threat, but in the end Bastien relented and allowed her to go. She returned mere days before her 24th birthday and was gifted with a Nightingale from the King.
Their relationship both broadened and deepened, and on the 29th of Mai, 1185, Jehanne was elevated to the position of Duchess of Namarre, at the same time Hermes de Trevalion became Duc of Azzalle. She and the other new Ducal leader would lock horns often, but strangely usually come out on the same side of issues.
The Story Continues
With war with the Hazaran looming, Jehanne had taken to studying leadership and tactics extensively while handling the day to day matters of her Duchy. She was aware that the need to marry and spawn heirs would be looming ever on the horizon, but she seemed to be pushing it off. Rumors of her relationship with the King continued to circulate, and neither has seemed to do much to refute them publically.
An Ending or a Beginning
During the autumn of 1186, Duchess Jehanne L'Envers left court, without much in the way of explination or goodbyes. It has been said that she asked to be released from her duties to retire to public life and the priesthood of Naamah. Whether that is truth or speculation, and the reasons for such a choice, are mostly left to rumor.
Personality
Jehanne is viewed as some as an Ice Queen, a woman of chill countenance who bristles at any romantic notions. Anyone trying to charm her is typically met with glares and snide comments. Or in some cases, horseshoes thrown at their shins. She is a shrewd businesswoman, and a fair and level headed diplomat, who has inner strength which comes out in times of crisis. She is not a frivolous woman, and it is rare to see her behaving in the youthful manner her age might indicate.
The only man she seems to warm to at all is King Bastien de Morhban, and rumors abound as to whether or not he has caused a thaw in the woman's otherwise frigid reactions towards men by virtue of his own bed. Other rumors suggest she has become his confidant and friend, and that is the reason she seems less chill towards him.
She does not make friends easily, but she seems to be loyal to Queen Athenais, whom she serves as a lady-in-waiting, and is often seen in the presence of Second Ariana of Valerian House, Comtesse Briar Renaud, or Evangeline no Balm.
Of late she has also taken to wearing less prudish garments, which have set off a bit of a stir in the circles of the court. Some say she is loosening up, some say she is trying to snare a husband, others say she is trying to draw the eye of the King.
