Training
Many things are taken into consideration when adepts of Bryony are chosen: skill in wagering, charisma, ability to bluff, inherant skill with numbers, and general vivacity. If a particularly promising child lacks in one or more of these areas when they are adopted into the House, a large part of their curriculum focuses on those skills. The game of cards, therefore, is a fundamental building block of the Bryony curriculum, for it hones almost all of these skills. Novices are taught to be proficient gamblers, and are given the secrets to playing which render them almost impossible to beat.
In their early teens, novices are introduced to the sensual arts, including the standard Trois Mille Jois (Three Thousand Joys), and many more of the same texts used by the other Night Court houses. These lessons are mostly theoretical, saving the hands-on practice for later on in the novice's career.
As they mature, novices are taught the very crux of Bryony House's canon: that coin is-- literally-- the currency which keeps the Night Court going 'round. If there was no money exchanged between courtesan and patron, then there would be no tribute to offer to Naamah. And so, aspiring Bryony courtesans learn that there is a close relationship between coin, power, desire, and worship-- and when one strikes a fine balance between these things, then they truly understand Bryony's canon, and may honor Naamah by mastering both monetary cunning and the sensual arts.

Quotes
- " It was a grand structure, three stories high, with steep gables. Every window was ablaze with light, and the mullions were adorned with ornate reliefs of bryony vine. When the door opened, laughter and music and the rattle of dice spilled out."
- ― Kushiel's Justice Pg 56
- " Patrons shouted out suggestions, profane and amusing and vile. Janelle nó Bryony listened, nodding, until she head one that took her fancy echoed a number of times. "The hourglass?" she murmured. "That would suit. Indeed, so well that I'll take the challenge myself. And I shall choose the contestant." She pointed at me. "Are you minded to accept, your highness? If you lose, I win a foreit of my choosing...I seek to please you in the time allotted...And you seek to outwait me. Will you play?""
- ― Kushiel's Justice Pg 57

Perspectives on Bryony
"Money has never been a big motivation for me, except as a way to keep score. The real excitement is in playing the game. /That/ is our canon."
- Golda no Bryony
"Do many actually try to cheat Bryony? I'm not one to start ranting about religion, but it does seem on the blasphemous side." - Genevieve no Mandrake
"Unexperienced young men and women come in all the time, more intent on winning a few coins than paying tribute to Naamah. But while this might seem a bit blasphemous to you, I assure you, it is not. For our canon suggests that Naamah dallied with the King of Persis for the very same reason-- cupidity. And so we tolerate it."- Golda no Bryony
