History

There are people in this world whose fortunes exceed all odds laid out against them; to whom the gods grant ten-fold their due by way of riches or influence, without requiring of them even the lift of a hand. Honore L'Envers, however, was never one of these people, and nor would she care to be.

Born the younger child and only daughter to Gabriel L'Envers and his wife Marianne in the heat of the summer of 1149, Honore was a girlish delight to her parents, who hadn't expected they would be gifted with a second child. From a very young age, a sense of familial pride was instilled in her, and she was taught that there were many ways one could go about furthering their family's name. While her older brother Renault quickly became interested in attaining fame and fortune for his family through political means, the younger strawberry-blonde grew to discover that she preferred good old-fashioned hard work, finding it less exhausting than the political trappings a title can sometimes afford.

And so, while her brother whiled away his time manipulating his family members into this and that position in the court at the City of Elua, Honore spent her days personally overseeing the tending of vineyards and execution of fishing boats surrounding their estate with their father. Though she was given little by way of official position or title, she obtained a great deal of self-satisfaction and worth from these physical duties -- and liked them even more for the fact that they had nothing to do with the court.

Thus passed the first three decades in the life of the young L'Envers woman, whose days were filled with grapes and rivers and sunshine and love. In the winter of 1179, both Honore's parents passed on in their old age, leaving her and her brother with a substantial family holding in Namarre, and she was granted the title Viscomtesse. The lady was at ease with their passing, for they had lived long and prosperous lives, and had left Honore with the means to continue running the estate as she always had. However, such a respite couldn't last forever. And when it rains, it always pours.

Word came to Namarre from the City of Elua in Mai of 1185 that an attempt had been made on the life of Jehanne L'Envers, one of Honore's nieces serving the Morhban crown. Apparently, Jehanne had made some formidable enemies over the imprisonment of a minor noble months before, and the renegades had finally chosen to strike out against her -- and her family. Within a matter of weeks, Jehanne's father and Honore's brother, the Comte, had been slain, along with his wife and son.

After the death of Renault, who had been expected to accept the title of Duc of Namarre, it became passing-obvious to most of the L'Envers family that Jehanne would take up the title of Duchess instead. This sat well with Honore, who had spent less than six months in the City of Elua throughout her entire lifetime, and had very little interest in the political dealings of the province. As long as she was able to tend to her vineyards in peace, she was happy.

But the abrupt absence of Jehanne from the Morhban court posed a problem for the province, as they were no longer adequately represented. And so, after much deliberation with fellow family members, Honore decided it was within her family's best interest to go to the City of Elua, at least temporarily, to lend her province a voice in matters of import.

Personality

Although she possesses the unyielding pride common to her heritage, Honore is infinitely more easy-going than her L'Envers counterparts. She is kind, quick to smile, hard-working, genuinely honest, and a nurturer by nature. And as much as she appreciates the opportunity to represent her family at the Morhban court, she would much rather be in Namarre tending to sunny vineyards and breezy fishing trades, out of the public eye.

Family, Friends, & Enemies

Family

Gabriel L'Envers (NPC, Deceased) - Father. In Honore's eyes, Gabriel was the very epitome of a successful man. Intelligent, hard-working, and loyal to a fault, this L'Envers established a position for his family as one of the most highly-respected of the realm with his financial cunning and the work of his bare hands. He passed away peacefully in old age.

Marianne L'Envers (NPC, Deceased) - Mother. A distant cousin to the L'Envers family, Marianne wed Gabriel when she was but seventeen years old. Though the red-head grew to love her family dearly, she sometimes resented the match made between herself and Gabriel, as it was entirely for reasons of politics and posterity. She, too, passed away from old age.

Renault L'Envers (NPC, Deceased) - Brother. Honore's older brother Renault was a Comte in the duchy of Namarre, where he served as part of a council managing the land in the absence of a Duc. He was assinated shortly before he was to be made Duc, as were his wife and his eldest child. He is survived by his daughters, Jehanne and Collette L'Envers.

Allies

Athenais de Morhban - Queen. After their very first meeting, Honore was honored by Her Majesty's offer of a position among her ladies-in-waiting. She hopes to make a good friend of the younger woman, and perhaps do her province some good in the process.

Bastien de Morhban - King. Though the relationship between Jehanne and the King was something to be rumoured and speculated about, Honore's relationship with the monarch is infinitely more subtle. She seems to hold a great amount of respect for him, no doubt stemming from Bastien's unwavering protection of her family in their times of trouble.

Damien le'Covin - Lord and Artisan. It seems Damien and Honore are two birds of a feather: both prefer working with their hands, and neither seem to have the affinity for politicking that their older siblings always did. Having contracted a beautiful piece of jewelry for her niece's natality, Honore looks forward to becoming more acquainted with the nobleman-turned-artisan.

"The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn" by Allison Krauss and Union Station

Tell you a little story, and it won't take long
About a lazy farmer who wouldn't hoe his corn
The reason why, I never could tell
That young man was always well

He planted his corn in the month of June
By July, it was up to his eyes
Come September, came a big frost
And all the young man's corn was lost

His story, kith, had just begun
Said, "Young man, have you hoed some corn?"
"Well I tried and I tried, and I tried in vain,
But I don't believe I raised no grain."

He went downtown to his neighbor's door
Where he had often been before
Saying, "Pretty little miss, will you marry me?
Little miss, what do you say?"

"Why do you come for me to wed?
You can't even make your own corn grain.
Single I am, and will remain.
A lazy man, I won't maintain."

He turned his back and walked away
Saying, "Pretty little miss, you'll rue the day
You'll rue the day that you were born
For giving me the devil 'cause I wouldn't hoe corn."
