Games

While there are many types of games to be found within the world of Kushiel's Legacy if you but flip the pages, there are some that are either mentioned by name, or used in KushielMUX. Some are supported by specialized coding, while others have no need for such and are played with no coding support. Most of the coded games available on the grid are designed for gambling. It's up to the players, if they bet coin, to follow through with paying.

Cards

Card games are very popular in the City of Elua, played with the same deck of fifty-two cards that has been popular for generations. The decks themselves vary in type and look, but all hold the four suits and the standard numbers of 1-10 and face cards. Often one can tell how old a deck of cards is by looking at the face cards, as the reigning King or Queen may be depicted. (In a manner either flattering or humorous).

One of the most popular games here at court is Vingt-et-Un, the French name for blackjack. The game is most oft played against a dealer (Usually a Bryony adept when one is in the Hall of Games or Bryony House.) Sometimes it is played for money, but often it is played for forfeitures or the answers to questions. The latter seems to be a favourite at court right now, and the questions and forfeits range from harmless to downright scandalous.

Some of the other card games played have been Poker, Chase the Ace, Piquet and War

Instructions & Commands

+shuffle - shuffle the deck.
+draw - draw a card. Everyone will see the card (though it can be hidden ICly for ease of use)
+draw/silent - Draw a card but don't show a message to anyone but yourself.
+draw <person> - draw a card and show the message to anyone except someone else in the room.

Dice

The Royal Dice Game as it is called in theme, or Hazard or Craps in more modern times, is a game of chance and luck. The objective of this game is simply to match or roll higher than the table's roll, using two six-sided die. A 7 or 11 wins unless the table gets a 7 or 11 and any ties go to the table.

Instructions & Commands

To play, just use +dice <amount in centimes> -- such as +dice 100 for 1 argents.

Kottabos

Kottabos is a Hellenic drinking game, from it's so called "Golden Era" A popular drinking game that ends up being more about hand eye co-ordination while inebriated than luck. Skill as well comes into play. This is not so portable a game as say cards or dice as it require awkward equipment to play and a few servants to set up and a place devoid of rugs or carpets due to the role of alcohol in this game. A tripodal stand sits on the floor. Secured to that is a large silver crater polished to brightness, it's bowl engraved with various decorations, usually images of the game itself being played, a la Hellene as it is described in the books. Emerging from the crater is a spire, ending at 4 feet high. Balanced on it's top, the finial, is a Plastinx.

Instructions & Commands

To win at Kottabos, the version described in the book is somewhat different from that which is listed here one has to drink from a shallow silver wine bowls with handles on either side. Once you are down to the dregs, or as they call it, lees, you take aim and fling the bowl without letting go of the bowl. What does go is the remnants of the wine. The goal is to knock the plastinx down, into the silver bowl and make it ring. It takes no small feat of dexterity to do such; dexterity that degenerates with the more alcohol consumed and more tries at the game. The potential for being splashed is great, but such is the known consequences when playing Kottabos. Money is bet upon whether a person will succeed or fail when it is their turn.

In game instructions

Kottabos is played with a silver floor stand like this one, propped up on tripodal legs. It pierces and holds a broad silver crater that has been polished to mirror-brightness. Figures inlaid around the rim depict a D'Angeline drinking party, each of them enjoying themselves in the Hellenic style. A spire rises out of the center of the crater some four feet high, topped with a small flat end upon which a silver disc, a plastinx, can be set.

The plastinx is centered upon the top of the spire.

Play Kottabos by using the following commands:

+ktoss - Make a toss towards the plastinx
+kreset - Replace the plastinx once it's been knocked off
