Background
The Château des Yeux de Mer rises from a rocky promontory on the coast of Eisande half a dozen leagues west from the gem of Marsilikos. The château, the ancestral home of House de Andrássy, is a stately and regal manor overlooking the sea and surrounded by rolling hills and lush vineyards where the call of the seagulls fills the air. For over two centuries House de Andrássy has occupied the château. The latest generation is the Comte Etienne de Andrássy who was born in the summer of 1159 on the eleventh of Juillet to the Comte Édouard de Andrássy and his lady wife Marie-Élise de Andrássy. The lady de Andrássy had been expecting twins, but Etienne's twin brother had died during childbirth. The death was an ill-omened way for one so young to begin life and the tragedy was the beginning of the murmured words and wary glances that would plague the boy. Etienne was the young couple's firstborn son and as such the boy grew up pampered and indulged. His every whim was entertained. He grew up among friends and family running through the hills and hiding in the vineyards. Climbing rocks on the coast and running the length of sandy beaches. The young boy spent as much time in the sea as out of it. As well as playing games upon the merchant vessels owned by his father when they put in to port.
Despite his childhood happiness the rumors of the common folk from a nearby village and the servants at the château continued. It was whispered that Etienne carried the de Andrássy family curse. He was destined to bring harm and hurt to everyone he loved according to the old Tsingani curse that had plagued the family for generations. According to the common folk the death of Etienne's twin at birth was proof enough of the curse not to mention the Tsingani blood that tainted the families veins.
Growing up Etienne had always been close to his mother. Marie-Élise de Andrássy had always been a frail wisp of a woman and as the boy grew older her health only declined. Marie-Élise was prone to fits of odd behavior and by the time Etienne had reached the age of ten his mother had succumb to a raving madness and had to be confined to her chambers in the White Tower, the most northern of the towers in the Château des Yeux de Mer. The servants of the château often found Etienne outside the door to the White Tower asleep on the cold stone floor during the night with one hand pressed to the iron-bound wood. The winter of 1172 had been especially harsh in Eisande and on one blustery snow filled night Marie-Élise shattered an upper window of the White Tower due to the ceaseless moaning of the wind out of the north and leapt. So it came to pass that finally after nearly three years of her mental capacities steadily diminishing Marie-Élise took her own life in a fit of madness.
Etienne was devestated by his mother's death as was his father, Édouard. Whispers and mutters about the family curse didn't help matters and Etienne withdrew from his family and friends in the coming weeks. The only persons he had regular contact with were his tutors who noted the boy's reclusiveness and reported this to his father. Édouard feared that his only son might succumb to the same madness that had stolen Marie-Élise from them both and insisted in taking a more active role in the boy's life.
Édouard hired tutors and trainers that kept the boy busy and thinking when he couldn't attend to matters himself. Édouard also began to instruct Etienne in the family business ventures and the business of being a nobleman of Terre d'Ange.
Etienne was just fourteen when he and his father made a business journey that was more than it seemed. The Comte Édouard met with the patron of the House Lefèvrs and arranged a marriage with thier daughter Mariska who was but a child of four at the time. Etienne was displeased with arrangement and consoled himself that it would be years before the girl came into her majority.
As they are want to do though the years rolled by and soon Etienne came into his own majority and became more active in his father's business ventures. Etienne went to work as crewman on one of his father's merchant vessels in the summer of his sixteenth year and by the age of nineteen he took a captaincy on a newly commisoned vessel in his father's fleet.
Etienne proved himself admirably as the captain of his own vessel and made many profitable trips abroad before returning one day to learn that the dormant curse had returned to claim his father who had died in a fall while riding.
So it was that at the age of twenty Etienne inherited his father's title and lands and his father was laid in the family mausoleum alongside Etienne's mother.
In the years to follow the Comte Etienne de Andrássy became increasingly reclusive other than engaging the company of a few select friends. The de Andrássy business ventures flourished under Etienne's hand but the Comte rarely left the Château des Yeux de Mer.
Personality
Etienne is a man ruled by the belief that everything and everyone he comes to care for or love will be hurt or come to harm because of his interest. For the last eight years of his life he has been somewhat reclusive within Eisande. He is often described as polite and jovial in some small way by those who's aquaintance he's made, but at the same time he has been known to be quiet, brooding, distant, and unapproachable in other instances.
Despite the Comte de Andrássy's moodiness the man is known to be an avid gambler and has an addictive personality. Two combinations that may eventually lead him and his house to ruin if unchecked. That being said he is also fond of strong drink and pretty faces and has been known to frequent adepts of both House Jasmine and Mandrake.
Appearance
The Comte is a tall young man standing approximately six foot and two inches tall. Rumors abound that the Andrássy line is tainted with Tsingani blood and this may very well be true when considering Etienne's dark, curly locks and deeply tanned skin. His eyes are sea-green in colour and set wide apart over a thin aquiline nose that's perfectly straight. His mouth is generous and expressive with full lips perched over a strong chin. He appears to be an athletic man in his late twenties judging by the faint crow's feet at the corner of his eyes from staring out at the sea.
Noble House de Andrássy
Comte de Andrássy
Once a small seaport serving a Tiberian legionary camp, it's history can be documented as early as the 10th century. Formerly, the first humble township om the Mediterranean seaside, was inhabited by monks and fishermen. A few strokes of oar away, the islands Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat raise from the waves. The sea traffic was intense but fruitful. It thrived in its seatrade, the fishing, agriculture and small and medium enterprises in which the Noble House de Andrássy exploited in their favor. They discovered other treasures as well, far more beneficial for the development of the city. They bought terrain at the Croix des Gardes and constructed there the villa 'Eleonore-Louise'. Their praises when they were aboard, or had guest from afar in their Château des Yeux de Mer, attracted the foreign aristocracy, who is then began building secondary residences for the winter.
With the port town's new fame, it became known as Cannes; Jewel in the crown of the 'Côte d'Azur'. Since the dawn of time Cannes embodies the sweetly scented nation of a life which everybody dreams of living. It is the sun which first playfully with the azure blue of the sea, before laying down to sleep in the arms of its wooded mountains. It is the harmonious marriage of sparkling colour and light. It's lush vegetation prospers languidly in the idyllic climate. The perfect getaway for those who appreciate the finer things in life.
