Background

Born Céline Lis, daughter of a florist, she did not know her father. He was never discussed, and when her mother married an older man around her third birthday, he was all but forgotten. Her step-father was given to bouts of temper, but a good provider and overall a loving man. By the age of ten, Céline had four half-siblings and her parents began regretting the number of children they had. Céline and Jean-Luc, the two most beautiful, were given to House Bryony to raise. The children were ten and five, at the time, respectively, and both were transferred to houses which suited them better after three years, the sister to Cereus and the brother to Dahlia.

Céline dedicated herself to Namaah soon after her arrival at Cereus. She was a hard-working pupil who caught the eye of several potential patrons in the year before her debut. In addition to the usual artistic studies of apprentices, singing and harp in her case, she demonstrated an interest in politics and the history of the Night Court. Céline’s debut was held in early winter, just a few weeks before the Longest Night. The theme was “A Single Day,” placing an emphasis on beauty’s evanescence. A delicate golden glass sun hung from an impossibly thin thread in the center of the ballroom; pastel blooms sat in crystal vases. The dress she wore was the shade of blue of the first hints of twilight; her ears pierced that morning with tiny diamond and gold studs. The winning patron, a duke, paid one hundred and fifty ducats for her virgin price, taken that night in a candlelit suite in Cereus House itself.

With patrons including the foreign dignitaries and several nobles, Céline earned her marque in little more than a year. She chose to stay on with House Cereus and made herself invaluable to several promising colleagues through her connections and sharp senses. When Cypres ascended to the rank of Dowayne, he chose her based on her unwavering loyalty to the House and level head in times of difficulty.

Description

Upon Céline’s features there is a sharp beauty etched, a loveliness which is beginning to crumble. Only the slightest hint of a wrinkle is present in each of the corners of her eyes, the cream skin close to how it must have looked at the height of her attractiveness, but the threat of time clearly looming. Drops of smoky crystal hang from her earlobes, matched by the choker of threads of gold and the same gems. Beneath careful lines of eyebrow, her eyes a strong gray, hard and sharp. Shades of pink and fallow give color to her upper cheeks and lips and her eyelids, respectively. Blonde hair is held up and back with pins coordinating with her other jewelry.

Her figure is slender, cleavage of her firm breasts emphasized by the magnolia gown’s dipping neck. The outfit of silk with an underlying layer of cotton jersey dips in the back also to display the fully completed marque of Cereus House. The sleeves are tight and long; the lace-trimmed hem allows for an inch of her fine, heeled shoes of tea rose to show.

Family, Friends, & Enemies

House Cereus

Lise nó Cereus - Protégée. Though Céline treats her similarly to the other courtesans in public, her favor towards Lise is well known. Lise is perhaps most privy to the Second's usually disguised emotions and is clearly trusted with a great deal.

The Night Court

Genevieve nó Mandrake - Friend. It's hard to say if Céline merely respects this woman or has some closer connection with her. Certainly, she has been seen entering the dowayne's office with a grave expression and returning in a more confident mood on more than one occasion.

Jérémie nó Dahlia - Acquaintance. Meeting him upon a short visit to Dahlia, Céline thinks well of him, but really hasn’t talked with him enough to be sure.

Micheline nó Valerian - Acquaintance. Céline has only seen this adept in the presence of her friend, Odette, and so makes little distinction between the two. They're typical, but seem to be sincere and hard-working enough, with Micheline perhaps the more shy of the two.

Odette nó Valerian - Acquaintance. Céline has only seen this adept in the presence of her friend, Micheline, and so makes little distinction between the two. They're typical, but seem to be sincere and hard-working enough, with Odette perhaps the more mischevious of the two.

Thomas nó Valerian - Friend. While she has a great respect for this man, Céline knows her dowayne is hardly making the best impression of their House upon him. She does her utmost to give Thomas a better impression, and sincerely sympathizes with him on the matter of contention between the two dowaynes.

Departed

Cypres Eld nó Cereus - Former Dowayne. Their relationship was an odd one. Céline was unwavering in her devotion to the Dowayne but did not fear to question him. She is one of the few who understood him much, and she realizes vice versa is true as well. They were on poor terms when, on the eve of Longest Night, he disappeared and has not been seen since.

Romarin nó Balm - Acquaintance. Céline had heard that this young man was quite talented in the healing arts, if not as much in their sensual applications. She came to him seeking relaxation after a particularly stressful chain of events and found him quite satisfactory.

Trivia

Céline is heterosexual, though her preferences within the male gender are well-hidden though rumored to be unusual.

“I May Know the Word” by Natalie Merchant
Keeping up appearances of the cold and distant

I may know the word
But not say it
I may love the fruit
But not taste it
I may know the way
To comfort & to soothe
A worried face
But fold my hands
Indifferent

“If It Makes You Happy” by Sheryl Crow
Her devotion to House Cereus is unwavering but trying at times

I promised you I'd never give up

If it makes you happy
It can't be that bad
If it makes you happy

My Skin” by Natalie Merchant
Innocence, like beauty, is fleeting

As if I'm becoming untouchable
I'm the slow dying flower
In the frost killing hour
Sweet turning sour anduntouchable
Oh, I need the darkness
The sweetness
The sadness
The weakness
Oh, I need this

“Mysterons” by Portishead
Need more be said?

Refuse to surrender
Strung out until ripped apart
Who dares, dares to condemn

“Bette Davis Eyes”
Ideally...

Her hair is Harlowe gold
Her lips sweet surprise
Her hands are never cold
She's got Bette Davis eyes

And she'll tease you
She'll unease you
All the better just to please you
She's precocious and she knows just
What it takes to make a pro blush
She got Greta Garbo stand off sighs
She's got Bette Davis eyes

She'll let you take her home
It whets her appetite
She'll lay you on her throne
She got Bette Davis eyes
She'll take a tumble on you
Roll you like you were dice
Until you come out blue
She's got Bette Davis eyes

She'll expose you, when she snows you
Off your feet with the crumbs she throws you
She's ferocious and she knows just
What it takes to make a pro blush
All the boys think she's a spy
She's got Bette Davis eyes

“Maps” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
On rare and difficult occasion the fragile beauty and untouchable exterior may break when faced with the possibility of true love

Pack up
I'm straight
Enough
Oh, say say say
Oh, say say say
Oh, say say say
Oh, say say say
Oh, say say say

Wait- they don't love you like I love you.
Wait- they don't love you like I love you.
Ma-a-a-a-ps, wait!
They don't love you like I love you.
