Briar D'Rosiers Trevalion
From Wiki
"There was a disturbance in my heart, a voice that spoke there and said, I want, I want, I want! It happened every day, and when I tried to suppress it it got even stronger." ~Saul Bellow barbarian wife. Her father, Lord Aleron, loved to sail ships and was something akin to a pirate, actually. He saw her mother, Sorcha while in Eire, and and brought her back to Terre D'Ange as wife. Briar was born.Briar has very little memories of her mother, who died of fever when she was very young. Though she does remember that she was very beautiful and strong willed and had a gift for music. Her father says she takes after her, not just in her looks, but also in her personality. Briar is the apple of her father's eye. He has spoiled her completely and utterly, giving her whatever her heart desired. He never remarried and she was the only child. She was not raised as a typical young lady at all. Her father, having no boys, often would take her aboard his ship and she learned from him and his crew, a lot about seafaring. He wouldn't take her with him, however, when he would travel, and she was left at home with a governess. During her childhood, she was constantly getting in trouble from various caretakers for something or other. Whether it be climbing trees or bullying the boys. She always came back with scrapes and messy hair, much to the bane of whomever was in charge of her. She did exactly as she wanted, whenever she wanted, and her father would simply indulge her. Surprisingly, for a time when she was young, Briar had hopes of one day having a future as a courtesan in Elua, part of the Night Court. It was a very deep and private part of her and though she always knew she had the beauty for such a life, there were other, more deeply disturbing and personal reasons why she longed for it. However, as she matured, she began to dismiss such ideas for herself, telling herself that her personality was not suited for it.The D'Rosiers Coat of Arms "Blaze with the fire that is never extinguished." ~Lusia Sigea
Briar came to Elua to become a Lady In Waiting to Her Majesty, the Queen and to acquire a rich and influential husband so that her family could expand their coffers and rise in influence. After only being in Elua a few days, she caught the eye of a foreign warrior named Antilochus Machemonon Aiakides and struck a rather creative bargain with the Hellenic man. He became her lover and mentor for the first few months she was in Elua. Not long after that, she came across a Comte from Camlach. However, she and Comte Eugene Renaud did not exactly hit it off at first. Rather, they enjoyed taunting one another and insulting the other. It was a game they both seemed to enjoy trying to make the other look bad in front of others. Funny thing was, however, they instantly became lovers despite the animosity they had for each other. When Antilochus mysteriously disappeared from the City, she began spending more and more time with Comte Renaud. Surprisingly to the both of them, love blossomed. But war was about to break out in Camlach, threatening the new couple's chance at happiness. That is perhaps the major factor why the two decided to become betrothed, and why Briar, fearing for Eugene and his family's line, went to the Temple of Eisheth to pray for a child. She became pregnant soon after and the couple planned to marry before he was sent off to war. Her father, Baron Aleron D'Rosiers, did NOT approve. He did not like Eugene for his daughter's chosen one. But, he accepted since she was already with child. However, due to the couple's explosive relationship, that wedding was postponed for many months and was eventually performed while Briar was recovering from the scare of a possible miscarriage, drugged and in a bed at an Inn, Eugene drunk. However, despite the threat of war and despite themselves, their future seemed bright. "Love does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does. Love is a battle, love is a war; love is a growing up." ~James A. Baldwin Despite the few bumps in the beginning, the next few months were stable and even happy for Briar, even if she and her new husband squabbled like cats and dogs sometimes. When they were alone, they were very tender and loving to one another. Then the news came. The fighting had broken out in Camlach. Eugene was ordered to go immediately. Briar threatened to follow, but was forbidden, due to her pregnancy, which was quite far along by now. Instead, she had to accept the next few months of being alone without her husband. Unfortunately, this was this was the beginning of the end, though neither knew it at the time. Now that her husband was gone off to war, Briar found herself quite alone at Court. Her best friend, Collette L'Envers, had departed to Namarre many months before and though she did enjoy many people's company, there were none she truly counted as friends. As her pregnancy progressed, she found herself looking more and more within herself. This was a time of much confusion for Briar, as she came face to face with many truths about herself that she had previously ignored. In a way, she was growing up, becoming a woman, where before, she was still just a girl. She did not socialize quite as much as she did before, yet in the final months of her pregnancy, something perhaps changed, for suddenly, she began making social appearances much more often, even attending parties. But Briar was Briar and try as she might to be a good wife and Comtesse, she could only be herself. Rumours started flying soon about her and her lovers. She flitted from party to another, always cheerful, always vibrant. The only time she faltered was in the Fall and Winter 1185, when she received news that Eugene had been listed as missing in action. However, he returned, on the eve of the Court's departure from Kusheth, wounded but alive. Twas then that Briar made the most fateful decision of their relationship. She decided to follow through with her plans to journey along with the Court on progress. She received Eugene's blessing and left, leaving their infant daughter with him for the time being. Almost immediately, she started causing more rumours as the Court traveled Kusheth, what with rocking carriages and such. However, once there, she kept mostly to herself. The only ripple she caused was when she was abducted one afternoon from the beach from some foreign man. She was quickly rescued, however, and all was well. Until the Comte showed up unexpectedly at the end of the progress. Apparently, the rumours had traveled back to Elua and he was none too happy about them. There were a couple of very notable rows between the two, the last one shrouded in secrecy. It was plain to tell, however, that it was the end for the Renauds.
And as the year 1186 started, Briar was a widow and keeping to herself most of the time. As the year draws to an end, however, certain mysteries abound. Such as why she had not been as socially active as she once was and why she left Elua for Azzalle in the Autumn, without a word to anyone. But what is more of a mystery is why she came back over two months later, and so very quietly at that. Some speculate that the rumours of political unrest regarding the Crown has piqued her interest and that she has returned to play the game of the politics. But others say it may be because of something else...
"I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end."~ Margaret Thatcher As the years passed, Briar took on any job that needed to be done. From the lowest scrubbing of the floor in the castle alongside the servants, to the trade agreements with Alba and Eire. She proved her competence and showed her Azzallese pride, and worked to make the province more prosperous and profitable for Terre D'Ange. She was, afterall, a scion of Azza and now a Trevalion both by marriage and recognised by blood. An accomplished horsewoman, she made sure that an expansive stable was built and maintained on the property of her new home, the ancient seat of Trevalion. She returned to Elua once in order to proclaim her fealty to King Bastien de Morhban, but also to petition him to elevate her youngest, still an infant, to the Marquise of D'Rosiers, rather than merely Baronne. Besides that one visit, she has not returned to Elua at all in ten years. The only time she did travel, was to visit Camlach, where she holds her eldest daughter Athene's holdings until the child becomes of age. There, she also spent time with the Caradec's, Rafe and Alaina, who are her close friends, and their children. (Briar was the couple's matchmaker years before.) However, after several years, that mysterious illness that had started so slowly, taking the lives of two Ducs and countless others, began to worsen and spread. More and people began to perish, not only in Azzalle, but throughout Terre D'Ange. No cause to be found, though the more zealous began to claim that the Companions had abandoned the D'Angelines and started to blame the Nobility for the epidemic, citing their selfishness and decadence, as the reasons. What started as a few minor voices became a loud cry throughout the land and the people were demanding more rights from the Nobility of the Kingdom. With the threat of power being taken away from the Ducs and Duchesses and their hereditary right to rule over their provinces in favour of a Parliament and the voting of the people, Briar's long-coveted position, and that of Rosamunde's, is in jeopardy. Not only that, but suddenly it has been proclaimed that there is, in fact, a Courcel heir alive, who should be ruling instead of the de Morhbans. With the explosive political atmosphere, as well as the worry of the plague which still ravages the land, it is no great surprise that Briar has decided to return finally to Elua. She brings with her her two children: Lady Athene Solaine Renaud, the Comtesse Renaud of Camlach. Thirteen years old, spiteful, petulant, and possessing a foul mouth, she brings her mother no end of problems. And Rosamunde Margot Rosiers de Trevalion, the apple of her maman's eye and her miniature, but for the child's startling sapphire eyes. Briar's plans, at this point is to fight Parliament's push for heridtiary rights of the Nobility to be revoked, thus protecting her and her children's positions and futures. Also, she plans to support the de Morbhan Throne, for they have been good to her throughout the years and had earned her loyalty early on. One small goal she has, though a longshot, is to try and wrangle a betrothal somehow, someway, of Athene to the young Prince.
Note: Some of the characters listed are NPCs and marked as 'open'. That means that they are open for the possibility of becoming PCs. If interested, please contact Briar's player. "If you cannot get rid of the family skeleton, you may as well make it dance." ~Geaorge Bernard Shaw Eugene Renaud (First Husband) - (Deceased) Comte Eugene Renaud was Briar's husband. When they first met, they practically despised one another, even though they became lovers. However, fate intervened and the pair fell deeply and passionately in love. They showed their love for one another strangely, though, frequently arguing or insulting one another, or doing things out of spite to hurt the other. When they were alone, however, they could be very tender towards one another. Eugene is the father of her daughter, Athene. But something changed between them upon his return from Camlach. Their relationship became very unstable and there were whispers that it wasn't what it seemed. On the Longest Night, 1185, the Comte took his own life, slitting his wrists and leaving Briar a widow and his daughter fatherless. "When Doves Cry" by Damien Rice Athene Renaud (Daughter) - Lady Athene Solaine Renaud is Briar and Eugene's daughter. She is the spitting image of her papa. Her first name was given in honour of the Queen. Upon the death of her father, she became the Comtesse Renaud, with her mother as executer until she is of age. Rosamunde D'Rosiers Trevalion (Daughter)- (NPC) Little Lady Rosamunde is Briar's youngest daughter. She became the Baronne D'Rosiers after Briar was proclaimed Duchess of Azzalle, and then elevated to Marquise after Briar petitioned the King on her child's behalf. She is the spitting image of her maman, but for her startling sapphire eyes. Aleron D'Rosiers (Papa) - (Deceased) Baron Aleron D'Rosiers was Briar's Father. She calls him 'Papa'. He raised his only child alone after his wife, Lady Sorcha died from illness. However, he was not always around when Briar was growing up, frequently traveling abroad on one of his ships. He was once something akin to a pirate, but has since retired. He and Briar were not as close as they once were, something that troubled her greatly, and still does, to an extent. Unfortunately, he passed away before the two could repair their relationship. There was a sailing accident off the coast of Caerdicci Unitas. Aleron was thrown overboard and didn't survive. Since his death, Briar has now also become the Baronne D'Rosiers. Sorcha D'Rosiers (Maman) -(NPC; Deceased. Portrayed by Cate Blanchett.) Lady Sorcha D'Rosiers was Briar's mother. She was from Eire and died of a fever when Briar was very little. Briar remembers her being beautiful and strong willed, with a temper much like her own. She also loved to sing and play the harp. Breandan mac Eilbhlin (Brother)- (NPC. Open.) Briar's younger brother. Eighteen years old, from Eire. His mother, Eilbhlin, is the sister of the High King of Eire. Aodh O'h-ir (Uncle)- (NPC.Open.Portrayed by Aidan Quinn.) Briar's uncle from her mother's side. A proud man of the Dalriada, he left to join Aleron in, umm, 'exploring'. Former Quartermaster aboard the 'Isabeaux'.
"True friends stab you in the front." ~Oscar Wilde Phillipe de Molay (Former? Lover)- A Comte from Siovale. One who seemed to play the lush well. But Briar sensed there was more than than meets the eye with this one. Still, he amused her, and seemd to be trying to garner her favour. When she was called upon to settle a debt with him, in the form of a kiss, he was bold enough to slip her the tongue, which when reminded of it, caused her to laugh merrily. They also shared the bad habit of getting kicked out of Houses. However, it seemed the two had grown closer, much, much closer. Gossip had speculated about them being a lot more than mere 'friends' and they seemed to spend quite a lot of time together, most notably in her Chateau, though they had also been spotted getting rather cozy at the Tower Lounge. She almost became his consort, but something happened between them and she fled back home to Azzalle without even telling him goodbye. "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston Alaina Caradec-This young Lady was sent to Briar to 'watch out over' or somesuch. From Camlach, her family wished her to be safe from all the fighting. Briar agreed, for she seemed interesting and not one of those overly proper types. She became Briar's best friend and the redhead even introduced Alaina to her future husband. Athenais de Morhban-Her Royal Majesty, Queen Athenais de Morbahn. She is married to King Bastien and is Queen of Terre D'Ange. Once a Valerian courtesan, she caught the eye of one of the most powerful men in the Kingdom. Briar was one of her many Ladies In Waiting and respects her above all others. After Briar left Elua and returned to Azzalle, she and the Queen still kept in touch and Briar even sent Athene back for visits with her godmother. Since her return to the City, Briar has been appointed to Head of Her Majesty's Ladies In waiting, on top of her duties of Duchess of Azzalle. It is a position she is most thankful for. Bastien de Morhban-His Royal Majesty, King of Terre D'Ange. . She did not know what to make of him at first. He is the King, thus has her complete loyalty, but he was one of the only men who did not seem the least impressed by her stunning beauty or keen wit, and that made her immediately doubt his taste. And Briar does not give a second thought to men who she feels have no taste. However, Briar came to view the King of her country with much more respect, can see him now as more than just simply a man but also as a powerful and impressive leader. During the years that she has been Duchess, she has grown closer to her Monarch, due to the Council and their political dealings together. Donatien Shahrizai-His Grace, Duc of Kusheth is a most alluring man and very handsome to boot. Briar seems very drawn to his charisma and has been heard to remark that she does favour his council. She had also been known to spend time in his company, perhaps in friendship. Anne Shahrizai-Lady Anne Shahrizai, Marquise of Anjou and Maitresse-in-titre to the King. At first, Briar did not know what to make of her and was even a bit intimidated by her. However, having spent some time with her, Briar has decided that she likes her very much. She was once one of the most popular and powerful Ladies of Court. Rafe Caradec- Alaina's Eiran husband. She helped with the matchmaking and counts him as a friend. Joanderis du Champ - A new acquaintance and one Briar seems to like. She has even confided in her a little. She suggested to Her Majesty that the woman be made a Lady-In-Waiting, and is happy that the Lady was made one. A former Valerian courtesan, just like the Queen, Briar is also happy that the Marquis du Champ finally found a wife. It seems his taste in courtesans finally paid off. Corierre du Champ- A most friendly young man, though a bit naive, in Briar's opinion. He seemed to give his heart away too easily to courtesans. Briar thought all he needed is a good noblewoman to spur his interests. Turns out..his tastes in courtesans finally paid off. Briar recently met his wife, Lady Joanderis du Champ, a former Valerian courtesan. She is very happy for them both. Beale- Briar was most fond of this cheerful young Eglantine. So fond, in fact, that she loaned the Marquis Du Champ a good bit of money so that he could win the boy's debut price, for she knew how the two were quite fond of each other. Though she would not contract him for herself, she would, however, enjoy visiting him and his House now and again. "Friends may come and go, but enemies accumulate." ~Thomas Jones Elaine de Molay- (Deceased) A very complex situation, this was, and one Briar hadn't much experience with. Briar quickly picked up on this young woman's secret and felt an instant like of her. She felt they had much in common and was always willing to give friendly advice to her. However, it all changed once Briar became involved with the younger woman's betrothed, now husband, Phillipe de Molay. It seemed that Lady Elaine did not like such a relationship and even came and insulted Briar in her own home! After many talks with Phillipe, Briar was assured, though, that Elaine had come to accept their relationship and for a time, she was very relieved and content. But once more, all was flushed down the tubes when Elaine happened upon them in an embrace one day and Briar saw the flash of pain her eyes. So many little things...Briar was convinced that she is not truthful with Phillipe with how she really felt and only told him what he wanted to hear in order to keep him. The red-head had grown very wary of Elaine and that wariness grew after the wedding, which she feels happened way too soon. She never trusted Elaine and felt she was the wrong woman for Phillipe, but she ended up leaving so that the man she loved would not have to choose between them. She recently was told of her passing, and though she feels for Phillipe's loss, Briar herself feels no sadness at the woman's death. "A long novitiate of acquaintance should precede the vows of friendship." ~Henry St. John, First Viscount Bolingbroke
Sarira de Helleborne - The current Prime Minister and Briar did not exactly hit it off upon their first meeting. Briar already distrusts the idea of Parliament greatly, which no doubt has coloured her opinion of the woman, perhaps unfairly. Then again...perhaps Briar's opinions are well-placed. However, though she finds the threat of this woman and what she represents alarming and dangerous to all she believes in and holds dear, she cannot help but admit that at least part of the woman's heart is in the right place. Not yet an enemy, but strongly suspected to perhaps become one. Maximus Corvinus (Former Lover) -A most intriguing man, was this Kusheline Knight, and rather bold, to boot. Briar was known to enjoy his company a lot. He did kiss rather well, too. However, events had her not seeking his company suddenly. Aristide de Rousseau-The Priestess of Kushiel was always an enigma to Briar. There was surprise there, as the woman did not cloak her identity in secret, but also a strange sort of approval in such, for it showed her pride. However, her first impression was that the other woman was disrespectful to those above her in station, after she outright insulted the Princess of Kriti in public. She also seemed rather...squeamish of blood, which both amused and bemused Briar. Raissa-(NPC. Open. Portrayed by Amanda Root.) Raissa is the nanny Briar hired to look after Athene when her eldest was a baby. She is of undetermined age and a bit plain. Usually she just blends into the background, unless the environment gets tense or the children misbehave. Then she will become nervous and wring her hands. Despite that, Briar thinks she does a good job taking care of the girls. Marigold-(NPC. Open. Portrayed by Amber Tamblyn.)This woman is Briar's personal maid. She is bubbly, enthusiastic and warm and is totally devoted to Briar's comfort and happiness. Unfortunately, she is also an easy target for Briar to lash out her frustrations at.
Known as 'The Rose of Azzalle' for her beauty and sharp temper. Also has a love for horses and of riding. Her own mare is quite a remarkable creature, descended from Eiran stock. Pure white with bright green eyes. The horse's name is 'Rosebud'. Her maiden name 'D'Rosiers' means 'Of the Rose Bushes'. The D'Rosiers family seal is the Scarlet Rose. The Renaud family seal is the Blue Rose. When Briar and Eugene wed, they incorporated both to the seal they use today to denote their branch of the Renaud family. Upon becoming the Baronne D'Rosiers, however, she reverted back to using her own family seal. However, now that she is Duchess, she uses the Trevalion family seal of the Navigation Star as her seal for official correspondence, though for more personal letters, she still uses the scarlet rose. For letters, Briar frequently uses a pale pink stationary and scents it with rose perfume. She prefers rum as her drink of choice. Straight from the bottle. However, for more genteel occasions, she prefers fine Azzallese red wine and will drink such from a glass. If she must. Though she loves the rain, she has a fear of thunder. Upon the death of her husband, she became simply Baronne D'Rosiers, the title of Comtesse being passed on to their daughter. However, until Athene is of age, she is her daughter's regent. After she became Duchess of Azzalle, her youngest daughter, Rosamunde, inherited her mother's former title, though was elevated to Marquesse after Briar petitioned the King. Briar is secretly attracted to the Blessing Priest at Azza's Temple and can sometimes be found there talking to him. Briar is known to gift her personal favour, a scarlet ribbon, to those she is especially fond of. She is descended from the Dalriada, the Clan of the White Mare, through her mother's blood.
